A new, well-crafted scam claiming to be from Google Webmaster has started to do the rounds and seems to be quite successful, at the moment, at evading spam filters.
The email asks you to verify your Google ID by way of a very convenient link which is included in the email.
The email looks like this:
Should you have the misfortune to click on this link you will be taken to a site where your identity can only be verified via a micro payment from a credit card. I leave the rest to your imagination!
Thankfully, if you use Google as your preferred search engine and you have 'safe search' enabled, then Google blocks this site:
A quick check on the domain via whois.net reveals that the domain is actually available to purchase!
Should you be in the regrettable position of reading this AFTER you have clicked on the link to verify your supposed Google ID, then you need to take immediate action:
- Notify your bank / card company immediately.
- Change all of your passwords - online and offline.
- Get your system checked by an IT professional.
- Check your statements for suspicious activity and you'll need to keep an eye on them for a month or two just to be on the safe side.
