Is Your Keyboard Missing Some Keys?
It's Monday morning, you are checking your email while having some toast. The cat of course, wanting your attention is purring loudly and walking between you and the keyboard, so you gently guide the feline bundle of hair away. Except, Mr Tiddles decides it would be a good idea to claw at the keyboard, just to stay a little bit longer!
Those kitty claws fit right between the keys and before you know what's going on keys are pinging off in all directions!
Problem:
The dust has settled, 5 key are missing from the keyboard and the cat, dog, hamster, parakeet or child is now grumpy after being manhandled.
This is a true case which our computer repair workshop had to deal with:
A 20 month old boy decided to 'explore' his Dad's brand new laptop
Solution:
Find all the keys, and the tiny little plastic scissor platform support.
Now check the laptop and make sure you aren't missing any of the rubber cone shaped bit from under the key.
Providing you have found all the pieces, they aren't damaged and the rubber cones are all intact then all is well, the keyboard can probably be reassembled.
It's fiddly and the plastic mechanisms are easily broken so unless you have a large bag of patience then your local pc repair might be better doing this for you.
If there's a broken or missing key, or mechanism part then don't fear, individual replacement keys can be purchased.
If there are more than five keys missing. Or a rubber cone has come off then the replacing the keyboard could be the best option. The most difficult part of this is normally sourcing the correct replacement. Fitting is relatively easy, with the ribbon connector the only part that needs extra care.
All in all this is one of those repairs left to someone who has done it before, the line between success and failure on a DIY fix is pencil thin for anything except a full keyboard replacement.
