Liquid Spill on Your Laptop?
A new series of articles from PC Solutions with advice on common computer problems, how to fix them and perhaps more importantly how to avoid them.
It's Sunday evening and you are having a quiet browse on the internet, chatting with friends via Skype or updating Facebook.
Tragedy strikes!!! You accidentally knock over your glass and the contents land directly on your laptop!!
.
Problem:
Laptops do not like water, orange juice, tea, coffee, milk, beer, red wine or any other liquid spilled on them.
Everyone thinks this won't happen to them, and that they are careful, but we still see liquid damaged laptops coming in every single week.
To add insult to injury, 95% of the owners have not backed up!!
Solution:
The only real fool proof solution to avoiding liquid spill on your laptop, iPhone, MacBook or iPod is to keep the two items totally separate.
But if you have the misfortune to suffer a spillage then follow these steps immediately:
Turn off the laptop (if it somehow stayed on).
If the laptop was off when the liquid was spilt on to it, DO NOT SWITCH THE LAPTOP ON
You would be amazed how many laptop owners turn their laptop on straight away to see if it is alright
Turn off mains and remove power cable.
Remove battery.
Wrap the laptop in a towel and put it somewhere warm like an airing cupboard, above the hot water tank but not too hot.
Leave it there for a week or two.
Whatever you do, do not under any circumstances try to turn the laptop back on!
Give it a chance to dry out first.
If you are lucky the laptop will boot once it’s dried out.
If not, then I'm afraid it’s probably not worth fixing. Time to start checking your insurance policy. Your laptop is insured is it not??
The good news is all the data you haven't got round to backing up is more than likely still safe and sound on your hard drive.
Take your laptop to your local reputable PC repair shop and they should be able to extract the hard drive and transfer the data to something suitable for you.
If you have any questions or comments about this How To article, we would be delighted to hear from you.
